Regarding the adsorbed gas (adsorbate) for any adsorbent, under the
adsorption equilibrium, the lower temperature, higher pressure, the
bigger adsorption capacity. On the contrary, higher temperature,
lower pressure, the smaller adsorption capacity. So the adsorption
and separation methods of gases usually employ two circulating
processes of temperature swing adsorption and pressure swing
If the pressure is invariant, under normal temperature or low
temperature condition, it utilizes high temperature desorption
method, which is called temperature swing adsorption. Due the large
specific heat capacity of adsorbent, and small heat conductivity,
it needs long time for warming and cooling, and the operation is
troublesome. So the temperature adsorption mainly used to purify
the gas with less adsorbate.
If the temperature is invariant, under the condition of pressuring,
it utilizes decompression or normal pressure desorption method,
which is called pressure swing adsorption. It is obvious that
pressure swing adsorption conducts adsorption and desorption
through changing pressure.
